AZURMENDI RESTAURANT · BILBAO, SPAIN
NEW CONSTRUCTION
Azurmendi is a 3 Michellin Star restaurant that was awarded as the Most Sustainable Restaurant in the World and obtained the LEED Gold Certification. They installed Onyx Solar's photovoltaic insulated glass panels integrated within the curtain wall and skylight. The photovoltaic glass installed is made of amorphous silicon solar cells and features a semi-transparency degree of 20%. This architectural choice promotes the entrance of natural light meanwhile filters 99% and 95% of ultraviolet and infrared radiation, thus preventing interior aging and ensuring comfort among the demanding foodies who decide to delight themselves with the food that comes out from chef Eneko's stoves.
The photovoltaic glass at Azurmendi was carefully selected to align with the restaurant's environmental vision. With a nominal power of 40 Wp per square meter, it efficiently harnesses solar energy to support the building’s operations, contributing to the restaurant’s energy self-sufficiency. The 10% visible light transmission ensures soft, diffused daylight, complementing the serene dining environment, while the 28% solar factor minimizes heat transfer, maintaining optimal indoor temperatures. This sophisticated integration of renewable energy not only enhances sustainability but also respects the restaurant’s unique architectural design, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
Azurmendi was conceived and built with a priority on sustainability. The design of the building allows for a space where boundaries are broken and modern architecture blends with nature, penetrating the interior and extending onto the external roof, which houses the sustainability center.
