Castle Lane Façade incorporating Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Technology Glass by Onyx Solar

CASTLE LANE · LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM

NEW CONSTRUCTION

Onyx Solar has completed a new project few meters apart from Buckingham Palace in London. The building incorporated a ventilated façade system made of crystalline silicon photovoltaic glass. The project goals included the maintenance of an opaque look for the building’s glass façade, making it stand out from the rest of building materials. The  glass panels was manufactured with a black color ceramic frit treatment on the surface and it produces a free and clean power to its owners reaching the nominal power and the solar heat coefficient desired by them for this surface. For this project DROO employed a recurring element of English architecture through a fresh interpretation of the arched window on the glass façade. With a contemporary design in a highly protected conservation area, the curved glass extends tangentially from the building to enlarge the living space, intruding into the street as a semi-external floating spatial experience.

EXPLORE THE INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THIS SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT

The photovoltaic glass used for Castle Lane is particularly well-suited for the unique architectural and energy requirements of the project. With a VLT of 0%, the glass ensures complete opacity, offering privacy while achieving the aesthetic vision of a sleek, modern façade. The g-value of 23% strikes the perfect balance between heat control and energy generation, ensuring the building remains energy-efficient throughout the year. The photovoltaic glass also reaches a nominal power of 130 Wp per square meter, significantly contributing to the building’s renewable energy production and reducing its overall carbon footprint. The custom design of the photovoltaic glass seamlessly integrates into the building’s exterior, enhancing its visual appeal while providing functional energy performance. This project highlights the ability of photovoltaic glass to merge modern design, sustainability, and functionality in urban architecture, making Castle Lane a landmark of innovation in London’s conservation areas.
