Center Novel Therapeutics Skylight incorporating Amorphous Silicon Photovoltaic Technology Glass by Onyx Solar

CENTER NOVEL THERAPEUTICS · UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

NEW CONSTRUCTION

A partnership between BioMed Realty, the University of California and the design team of Perkins-Will led to the award-winning Center for Novel Therapeutics (CNT). The atrium allows the massive entrance of natural light inside the building and constitutes an important source of clean energy. The insulated photovoltaic glass units installed incorporate a 12mm air chamber that offers a great thermal insulation throughout the whole year reducing the need for heating and cooling.

EXPLORE THE INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THIS SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT

The photovoltaic glass used in the Center for Novel Therapeutics is an excellent choice to meet both the aesthetic and functional demands of this high-tech research facility. With the ability to reach a nominal power of 34 Wp per square meter, the photovoltaic glass contributes to the building's energy efficiency, helping to offset a portion of its energy consumption. The 16% visible light transmission allows an ideal amount of natural daylight to filter into the atrium, creating a bright and welcoming environment for researchers and staff while minimizing glare. Additionally, the glass's 12% G-value ensures superior control of solar heat gain, which is crucial for maintaining a comfortable indoor climate in California's varying weather conditions. The combination of natural light, energy generation, and thermal insulation makes the photovoltaic glass a perfect solution for this innovative research center, aligning with the project's sustainability goals and enhancing the overall functionality of the building.

Overview of Center Novel Therapeutics skylight incorporating Amorphous Silicon Photovoltaic Technology Glass by Onyx Solar

"One of the more notable features of the CNT is the atrium. The atrium serves as a gathering place where people are encouraged to experiment, collaborate and share ideas of their on-going research and discoveries. The atrium serves as the central lung for the building introducing generous amounts of daylight into the adjacent offices and meeting areas."
