Sonae Sierra Skylight incorporating Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Technology Glass by Onyx Solar

SONAE SIERRA · PORTIMAO, PORTUGAL

RENOVATION

Sonae Sierra, a leader in shopping and entertainment centers, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by integrating Onyx Solar’s photovoltaic glass into its facility in Portimão, Portugal. The project involved replacing the existing skylight with advanced multidimensional crystalline silicon photovoltaic glass, blending functionality with cutting-edge renewable technology.

The installation provides the building with a significant energy boost, generating approximately 900 MWh of free, clean energy over its lifetime. This output is enough to power around 1,800 lighting points throughout the shopping center, substantially reducing its reliance on non-renewable energy sources. The skylight not only enhances the building's aesthetic but also contributes to energy savings and reduced operational costs, all while maintaining the center's commitment to sustainability.

EXPLORE THE INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THIS SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT

This photovoltaic glass is designed to meet the client's specific needs, featuring both a visible light transmission (VLT) and g-value surpassing 40%, ensuring an optimal balance between natural lighting and solar energy generation. The glass panels also reaches a nominal power output of 110 Wp per square meter, making it a highly efficient solution for clean energy production. By integrating photovoltaic glass, Sonae Sierra is setting a new standard for the shopping center industry, proving that energy-efficient solutions can be seamlessly incorporated into commercial spaces without compromising on design or functionality.
