Gioia 22 Façadefeaturing Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Technology Glass by Onyx Solar

GIOIA 22 · MILAN, ITALY

NEW CONSTRUCTION

Continuing one of the largest urban regeneration efforts in Europe, Gioia 22 is a landmark office tower in Milan’s business district. As Italy’s first nearly net-zero building, Gioia 22 advances fresh perspectives and progress in a city known for its innovative spirit. Developed by COIMA and designed by Pelli Clark & Partners, Gioia 22 exceeds Milan’s energy regulations by 15 percent, using on site renewable energy sources including 6,000 m2 of crystalline photovoltaic glass panels installed on the façade, which generate 65 percent of the energy required for heating and cooling. The façade system wich count with around 800 kWp installed was developed together with Permasteelisa, a leading global contractor of architectural envelopes responsible of some the most iconic façades of the world.

EXPLORE THE INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THIS SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT

The photovoltaic glass used in this project is a perfect match for Gioia 22’s ambitious sustainability and design goals. Not only does the photovoltaic glass generate a significant portion of the building’s energy needs, but its seamless integration into the façade also preserves the sleek, modern appearance of the tower. With a focus on optimizing energy performance, the glass provides excellent thermal insulation, which helps reduce the building’s reliance on traditional energy sources for heating and cooling. The transparency of the glass ensures a comfortable indoor environment by allowing natural light to penetrate the space, while also minimizing heat gain—ideal for Milan’s varied climate. This photovoltaic façade exemplifies how cutting-edge technology can be adapted to urban landscapes, supporting eco-friendly architecture without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. Gioia 22 stands as a benchmark for sustainable construction in Europe, blending innovation, functionality, and energy efficiency.
