MUNICIPALITY BUILDING · KYRENIA, CYPRUS
NEW CONSTRUCTION
This municipal building, located in Cyprus, enjoys Onyx Solar photovoltaic glass panels integrated into the façade. They offer multiple benefits including free, clean energy generation and thermal insulation to increase the functionality and sustainability of the building. The thermal insulation advantages, help to regulate the internal temperature of the municipal building. This is especially advantageous in Cyprus, where the climate is characterized by hot summers. The glass panes act as a barrier, minimizing heat transfer and thus reducing the need for excessive air conditioning. The energy-generating glasses installed in this building generate enough power to feed 9.000 light points every day and prevent the emission of more than 300 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The photovoltaic glass used for the Kyrenia Municipality Building was specifically selected to align with the energy and comfort needs of the structure. With a nominal power that can reach 40 Wp per square meter, the glass efficiently contributes to the building’s energy demands. The 10% visible light transmission (VLT) ensures that natural light enters the interior while still providing necessary shading, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Additionally, the g-value of 10% further enhances the glass’s ability to block solar heat, ensuring a cooler indoor environment and significantly lowering energy costs for air conditioning.
This project perfectly exemplifies how photovoltaic technology can blend seamlessly with architectural design, enhancing both energy efficiency and aesthetics. The photovoltaic glass not only reduces the building’s environmental footprint but also reflects the city’s commitment to sustainability and modern design, making it an ideal choice for a public building in the Mediterranean climate.
