PHOTOVOLTAIC CANOPY - NEWARK LIBERTY AIRPORT
NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
PHOTOVOLTAIC canopy
At Onyx Solar, we are proud to have provided our innovative technology for the New Terminal A building at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, United States. This BIPV project (Building Integrated PhotoVoltaics) consist of a photovoltaic canopy located at the Departures Area of this terminal.

This projects at Newark Airport is a significant step towards sustainable energy generation in the aviation industry. The total power of the crystalline silicon photovoltaic glass canopy is approximately 167 kWp, and the power per glass varies from 228 Watt/unit to 381 Watt/unit.
In total, 540 photovoltaic glasses are used in the system, which comes in several sizes, such as 2,134x1,677 mm or 2,286x1,677 mm. The PV glasses consist of heat-soak tested 10T+10T mm glass configuration, which is both durable and efficient, with a 52 % transparency degree.
We ensure that our PV glass meets all glare and glint requirements. In certain situations, the glass surfaces of the solar energy systems can reflect sunlight and produce glint (a momentary flash of bright light) and glare (a continuous source of bright light). Federal Aviation Administration, also known as FAA, has learned that glint and glare from solar energy systems could result in an ocular impact to airport traffic control tower (ATCT) personnel working in the tower cab, and compromise the safety of the air transportation system.
It is bird friendly glass as well. Millions of birds accidentally fly into glass windows, doors and façades, with many of these collisions being fatal. Onyx Solar’s glass solutions are safer and reduces the risk of bird collisions, whilst providing the aesthetic and performance attributes to the airport.
New Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport will replace the existing Terminal A with a new 1 million-square-foot, 33-gate domestic terminal designed to meet the increasing volume and needs of travelers for years to come.
New Terminal A will include expanded amenities, a more efficient check-in process and ample space for passengers (more than 46 million annually) to pass through the security screening process quickly and efficiently. The terminal is expected to meet LEED Silver energy and sustainability standards and is designed to provide flexibility for long-term value.
