NEYA HOTEL · PORTO, PORTUGAL
RENOVATION
This hotel in located in Porto’s area has a rich historical background as a former convent. Through a meticulous renovation, the original architecture and historical artifacts of the abbey were preserved, maintaining the essence of the building’s heritage. Onyx Solar manufactured amorphous silicon photovoltaic glass panels for the project. A key feature of these panes is their efficient U-value, which is essential for thermal insulation. In a climate like Porto's, known for its diverse weather conditions, the ability to maintain a stable indoor temperature is crucial for guest comfort while also reducing energy costs associated with heating and cooling. One of the most remarkable aspects of Onyx Solar's photovoltaic glass is that it feels and looks like conventional architectural glass. This characteristic allows the Neya Hotel to reap the benefits of modern solar technology without compromising the aesthetic integrity of the historic building.
The photovoltaic glass used in the Neya Hotel project features a solar factor and visual light transmission of 10%, striking the perfect balance between energy efficiency and aesthetics. This low VLT ensures that the glass panels limits solar heat gain while still allowing just enough light to brighten the space, contributing to a comfortable indoor environment. With a nominal power of 47 Wp per square meter, the photovoltaic glass generates clean energy while reducing the hotel’s dependence on external power sources, making it an ideal solution for sustainability in the hospitality industry. Additionally, the carefully chosen transparency level maintains the building’s historic charm without detracting from the modern upgrades. The photovoltaic glass not only supports the hotel’s energy efficiency objectives but also enhances the guest experience by creating a visually appealing, environmentally conscious space. This seamless integration of technology and design makes the Neya Hotel a benchmark for sustainable renovations in historic properties.
