PATRAS SCIENTIFIC PARK · GREECE
PHOTOVOLTAIC SKYLIGHT AND PARKING · CRYSTALLINE SILICON TECHNOLOGY
At the heart of the Patras Scientific Park, a key hub for innovation and technology owned by the Greek government, Onyx Solar has supplied and installed 88 advanced photovoltaic glass modules. These glass panels have been integrated into a skylight for one of the park’s buildings and a solar pergola in the parking area, showcasing a perfect blend of sustainability and functionality.
The crystalline silicon glass modules, measuring 1,850 mm x 1,200 mm (6.07 x 3.94 ft), have a power capacity of 233 Wp each. The cell density was tailored to meet the client’s specifications, allowing ample daylight to pass through while maintaining optimal energy generation. This thoughtful design ensures that both the skylight and pergola serve dual purposes, providing natural light and generating clean energy. With a total installed power capacity of 20 kWp, the photovoltaic system generates approximately 33,500 kWh of clean energy annually. This is enough to power 1,912 light points across the park and prevent the emission of over 3 tons of CO2 each year, contributing significantly to the park’s sustainability goals.
The use of photovoltaic glass at the Patras Scientific Park highlights its suitability for projects requiring both energy generation and architectural appeal. The decision to install photovoltaic glass not only reduces the park’s carbon footprint but also enhances the building’s thermal performance. The glass panels offer excellent insulation properties, helping to regulate indoor temperatures, which is crucial for a research facility where precision environmental control is needed. By incorporating these solar glass modules into both the skylight and pergola, the park benefits from an innovative solution that optimizes space usage while delivering clean energy.
