Boston Logan Airport Façade incorporating Amorphous Silicon Photovoltaic Technology Glass by Onyx Solar

BOSTON LOGAN AIRPORT · BOSTON, UNITED STATES

NEW CONSTRUCTION

New Terminal E at Boston Logan Airport currently features a 4,500 SqFt photovoltaic curtain wall made of amorphous silicon photovoltaic insulating glass units fabricated by Onyx Solar. Designed by the duo AECOM + Luis Vidal, the new terminal expanded its 12 boarding gates to a total of 19, accommodating the large number of passengers passing through each year. The photovoltaic glass was highly customized in order to fit the architectural design which features organic shapes and volumes. It provides unobstructed views and insulates the building thanks to its argon spacer with a low-e coated inboard.

EXPLORE THE INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THIS SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT

The photovoltaic glass chosen for this project was an excellent fit for Boston Logan Airport, meeting both the energy efficiency and aesthetic demands of the terminal. With its advanced solar technology, the photovoltaic glass units generate clean energy, reducing the airport’s reliance on external power sources while contributing to its sustainability goals. The design flexibility of the amorphous silicon glass allowed the architects to create a visually striking façade that blends seamlessly with the organic forms of the terminal’s design, without sacrificing functionality. In addition to energy generation, the glass provides superior thermal insulation, ensuring passenger comfort in Boston’s varying climate. The inclusion of the argon spacer enhances the insulating properties, minimizing heat loss during colder months and helping reduce the building’s overall energy consumption. This project exemplifies how photovoltaic glass can be adapted to meet the complex requirements of large-scale public infrastructure, providing both practical energy solutions and modern architectural aesthetics.
