PORT AUTHORITY · MALLORCA, SPAIN
Onyx Solar has installed a photovoltaic skylight as part of the refurbishment of the Balearic Port Authority building in the Port of Mallorca. This skylight integrates low-emissivity (low-e) amorphous silicon glass, designed to enhance energy efficiency while improving the building's insulation and reducing the greenhouse effect.
The glass modules, measuring 2,200 x 1,300 mm (7.22 x 4.26 ft) with a 20% semi-transparency level, allow ample natural light to enter while filtering harmful UV and infrared radiation. This feature helps prevent interior overheating, ensuring a more comfortable environment for the building’s occupants. With an installed power capacity of 6 kWp, the photovoltaic skylight generates approximately 8,700 kWh of clean energy per year. This energy is sufficient to power 500 lights for four hours a day, reducing the building’s reliance on traditional power sources and preventing nearly 6 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
The skylight is particularly well-suited to Mallorca’s Mediterranean climate, where abundant sunlight is available throughout the year. By incorporating photovoltaic glass, the building not only benefits from natural illumination but also enhances its sustainability by turning sunlight into a valuable energy source. The glass panels thermal properties further reduce cooling demands during the hot summer months, contributing to both energy savings and indoor comfort. This project demonstrates how modern photovoltaic technology can seamlessly blend with architectural renovations to create a more sustainable and energy-efficient building that aligns with the environmental goals of the Port Authority.
