Onyx Solar has supplied crystalline silicon photovoltaic glass for the installation of a photovoltaic canopy at Santiago Grisolía Public School, located in Valencia, Spain. This innovative solution provides both shade and shelter for students while generating clean energy for the school. The photovoltaic glass is designed with a high density of solar cells, ensuring maximum energy generation per square meter while reducing direct sunlight exposure in the playground. The installation consists of 42 photovoltaic glass panels, each measuring 1,700 x 1,000 mm, with a 4T + 4T mm glass configuration and a low-iron treatment for enhanced durability. Additionally, 25 of these glass units feature a green rear frit, adding a touch of color to the canopy and blending functionality with aesthetics.
This project is part of Valencia City Council’s broader initiative to integrate solar energy into public schools as part of their goal to become carbon neutral by 2030. During a visit in September 2022, Mayor Joan Ribó highlighted that the combination of this canopy and rooftop solar panels will cover 68% of the school’s energy consumption.
Valencia, awarded European Green Capital 2024, is recognized for its leadership in sustainable urban development, with a focus on green infrastructure, energy efficiency, and urban biodiversity.
