PHOTOVOLTAIC CANOPY – SANTIAGO GRISOLIA SCHOOL
SANTIAGO GRISOLIA PUBLIC SCHOOL
PHOTOVOLTAIC cANOPY
Onyx Solar has supplied its Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Glass that has been installed as a Photovoltaic Canopy in the Santiago Grisolía Public School, located in the city of Valencia, Spain.
Onyx Solar's PV Glass is integrated in tree canopies of the school main playground, so, it will provide shade and shelter to the kids, at the same time it generates free and clean energy for the building. The glasses are manufactured with a high density of cells to prevent the light from coming in while providing the maximum peak power per sqm.
Data:
- Total Area - 71 M2
- Electricity generated in 35 years - 453,296 kWh
- Total lighting points operating 4 hours per day in 35 years - 891 lighting points
- CO2 emissions Avoided in 35 years - 112 Tons of CO2
- Barrels of oil saved in 35 years - 267 barrels
Example of a feasibility study of crystalline silicon photovoltaic canopy in Valencia:
- Payback time < 3.4 years
- Internal rate of return (IRR) 30.5 %

The installation is composed of 42 units of Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Glass. Each module measures 1,700x1,000 mm and has a glass configuration of 4T + 4T mm and a low iron treatment. 25 units of glass are made with a green rear frit that gives them a colorful appearance.
This installation is part of an initiative launched by the Valencia City Council to include solar energy in all public educational institutions in Valencia as a way to reach their objective to turn the city into carbon neutral by 2030.
The project was visited last September 2022 by the Mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, and the resources management councilor Lluïsa Notario. The mayor explained that this installation, combined with conventional panels on the school’s roof, will generate 68% of the total energy consumption of the building.
Furthemore, Valencia has been awarded as the European Green Capital 2024, a distinction created by the European Commission in 2010 which recognises and rewards local efforts to improve the environment, and thereby the economy and the quality of life in cities. The European Commission's Green Capital Award is given each year to a city, which is leading the way in environmentally friendly urban living.
Valencia has based its candidacy on increasing green infrastructure, energy efficiency and the promotion of urban biodiversity, among other measures.
At Onyx Solar we could not be more proud to contribute our grain of sand, with this and other projects already executed in Valencia, so that the city can achieve these remarkable recognitions.
"The goal of the corporation was to be a more sustainable city, and open spaces, renew while preserving our essence. And we've made it."
Joan Ribó, Mayor of Valencia after being recognized as European Green Capital 2024.
