STERLING BANK · LAGOS, NIGERIA
RENOVATION
Originally constructed in the 1980s, this bank’s headquarters underwent an innovative refurbishment by integrating a second skin with photovoltaic technology which offers a contemporary design while ensures a sustainable and robust supply of clean energy for its employees. The façade now also filters harmful radiation and heat to achieve huge savings in cooling. The installation features 3,250 photovoltaic glass panels which cover an area of 6,500 square meters and achieve 1 MW of installed power. This groundbreaking project achieved a great milestone when it was made as the largest photovoltaic integration on the african continent. Each photovoltaic glass unit measures 2,000 x 1,000 mm and features a blue ceramic frit to align with Sterling Bank’s aesthetic requirements.
The photovoltaic glass used in this project was specifically designed to meet the energy needs and climatic challenges of Lagos, where intense sunlight and high temperatures are constant. With a nominal power that can reach 159 Wp per square meter, the photovoltaic glass ensures high energy efficiency, significantly reducing the building's reliance on external energy sources. The 0% visible light transmission (VLT) provides complete opacity, offering excellent thermal insulation while blocking harmful UV rays, which is critical in such a hot climate. The g-value of 29% further ensures effective solar control, minimizing heat gain and lowering the cooling demands of the building.
This project showcases how photovoltaic glass can be a perfect solution for both energy generation and environmental control in large commercial structures. By integrating photovoltaic glass, Sterling Bank has made a powerful statement about its commitment to sustainability and innovative design, ensuring that the building not only performs efficiently but also aligns with the bank’s aesthetic and functional goals.
