Centre for Sustainability Canopy incorporating Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Technology Glass by Onyx Solar

CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABILITY · SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

RENOVATION

The Old Coal Loader in North Sydney underwent a transformation into an innovative center for sustainability featuring an installation of photovoltaic laminated safety glass with crystalline cells that was customized to be installed using a spider fitting system. Each glass panel boasts a nominal power output of 626 Wp/unit. These frameless photovoltaic glass units provide clean energy and shade for visitors to the center.

From a technical perspective, the glass installed for this project provides a nominal power of 111 Wp per square meter, significantly boosting the Centre for Sustainability’s capacity for on-site solar power generation. This energy production is a key element of the bioclimatic design, ensuring the canopies not only provide shade but also actively contribute to reducing the facility's carbon footprint by minimizing dependence on external energy sources.

EXPLORE THE INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THIS SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT

The photovoltaic glass selected for this project meets the client's need for at least 40% VLT and a 40% solar factor, striking a balance between managing solar heat and allowing natural light. This ensures that the canopies are both functional and energy-efficient, providing comfortable shaded areas while generating solar power. The frameless photovoltaic glass, installed with a spider fitting system, enhances the canopies' sleek, modern design while maximizing energy collection. This approach not only provides shade but also seamlessly integrates the photovoltaic technology into the overall architecture, contributing to the project’s bioclimatic goals.

Using customized photovoltaic glass underscores the center’s commitment to sustainability, helping the project achieve its renewable energy goals and demonstrating leadership in environmental responsibility.
