BIPVBOOST

 

BRINGING DOWN COSTS OF BIPV MULTIFUNCTIONAL SOLUTIONS AND PROCESSES ALONG THE VALUE CHAIN, ENABLING WIDESPREAD NZEBS IMPLEMENTATION

The overall ambition of the BIPVBOOST project focuses on bringing down costs of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) solutions and processes along the value chain, enabling the compliance with the main market requirements and contributing to a widespread implementation in nZEBs.

The premise of the project is that BIPV market uptake has been hindered in the past years by the difficulties of the industry in providing holistic solutions complying with key demands from the market, such as aesthetics, flexibility of design and cost-effectiveness. In this sense, a joint industrial effort is crucial to conceive and develop highly-efficient and multifunctional energy producing construction materials that enable boosting market opportunities at a world-wide level for the European photovoltaic and construction industry value chains.

BIPVBOOST will address these challenges by implementing short- and medium-term cost reduction roadmaps along the BIPV value chain:

  • Flexible and automated BIPV manufacturing process
  • Large portfolio of multifunctional BIPV products
  • Digitalized process and energy management system along the value chain
  • Advanced standardization activities supporting the qualification of BIPV systems for a massive implementation in the building skin.

Led by TECNALIA, BIPVBOOST will be implemented by a multidisciplinary team of 19 partners from 7 European countries involving industrial and research partners. At least 17 demonstrated innovative solutions will result from the successful implementation of the BIPVBOOST project. Together with the large involvement from industrial partners in the consortium, a sound basis will be to pursuit a 50% reduction of additional cost of BIPV modules in 2020 and 75% reduction in 2030, and thus a substantial increase of market deployment of BIPV technology.

Our photovoltaic glass has already been installed in a wide variety of buildings in more than 350 projects across the planet, ranging from government buildings to railway stations and bus stops.

 

World´s leading companies and institutions such as Apple Inc, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Samsung, Coca-Cola, Heineken, Pfizer, G.W University to name a few, have led the adoption of photovoltaic glass within their industries.

 

We have provided design assistance to prominent architectural firms such as Foster + Partners, Gensler, Perkins + Will, S.O.M, A.S + G.G among others. Onyx Solar has also participated in joint ventures with general contractors such as Turner, Skanska, Jacobs, KPRS, ACS and Ferrovial.

    Tanjong Pagar

    Located in the middle of Singapore’s financial center, this 64-story tower is the tallest building in the country. Its design, carried out by S.O.M., the New York-based architectural firm, and construction was commissioned by the Korean multinational Samsung. Onyx contributed with the installation of a large photovoltaic canopy of 27,986 sq ft covering the main entrance to the building.

    PFIZER GENYO LABS

    The walls of the building are lined with semi-transparent, amorphous silicon photovoltaic glass panes which are anchored to the existing structure, thus enabling air to flow in the space between the panes and the walls of the building. Thanks to this innovative design, Pfizer offices are enjoying natural light, better thermal insulation and free clean energy with no CO2 emissions.

    Dubai Frame

    The Dubai Frame is an eye-catching impressive rectangular picture frame-shaped building rising 150 meters (492 Ft) from Dubai’s Zabeel Park, spanning 105 meters (344 Ft) horizontally. It attracted a million visitors from around the world during its first year of opening in 2018 and offered them stunning views of the city's past and present. This iconic skyscraper is considered one of the world´s most popular tourist attractions nowadays. Onyx Solar, the world’s leading manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) glass, supplied gold color photovoltaic glass for its rainscreen cladding system.

    Bell Works

    Bell Works is the product of the successful revitalization of the two-million-square-foot Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey. The mixed-use ‘metroburb’ is now a popular destination to work, shop, dine and more. Onyx Solar has supplied Bell Works with amorphous silicon photovoltaic glass panes, to cover a total area of 60,000 sq ft, and create the largest photovoltaic skylight in the USA. Because Bell Works is a landmark protected building, Onyx Solar had to design glass panes similar to the original ones.These glass modules provide this multipurpose building with a lot of natural lighting by capturing daylight and are also able to produce electricity free of CO2 emissions.

  • COCA COLA-FEMSA HQ

    COCA COLA-FEMSA HQ

    Onyx Solar photovoltaic glass panes were installed on the façade of FEMSA´s headquarters, which is the largest Coca-Cola bottling plant company in the world (Monterrey, México). The walls of the building are lined with semi-transparent, amorphous silicon photovoltaic glass panes which are anchored to the existing structure, thus enabling air to flow in the space between the panes and the walls of the building. Thanks to this innovative design, these main offices are enjoying natural light, better thermal insulation and cleaner energy with less CO2 emissions. The energy that the glass panes produce covers up to 15% of the building´s energy requirements.
