RESPONSE

Integrated Solutions for Positive energy and resilient Cities

Programme: H2020. European Commission.

 

RESPONSE is a smart city-oriented project, whose major goal is to support the delivery of a set of Positive Energy Blocks and Districts (PEB) – a limited geographic area whose average local renewable generation is greater than its consumption – in the Lighthouse cities of Dijon (FR) and Turku (FI) and their Fellow Cities: Brussels (BE), Zaragoza (ES), Botosani (RO), Ptolemaida (GR), Gabrovo (BU) and Severodonetsk (UA).

 

These Lighthouse cities will achieve a local RES (Renewable Energy Sources) penetration of 11.2 GWh/y, energy savings of 3,090 MWh/y and an emission reduction of 9,799 tons CO2eq/y within their PEB. Special focus is given to create resilient and safe cities, increasing quality of life and lowering the impacts of climate change.

 

To achieve that, RESPONSE will demonstrate a total of 10 integrated solutions, comprising 86 innovative elements (technologies, tools, methods), monitored with specific impact metrics (Key Performance Indicators, KPIs). Moreover, it will attract the interest of various stakeholders by generating innovative business models enabling the upscale and replication of the solutions forming a validated roadmap for sustainable cities across Europe and beyond.

 

The project adopts an energy transition strategy, which includes 5 Transformation Axes (TAs), namely:

  •     TA#1: Transformation of existing and new building stock into Energy Positive and Smart-ready;
  •     TA#2: Decarbonisation of the electricity grid and the district heating/cooling systems, supporting fossil-based regions in transition and the development of energy communities;
  •     TA#3: Proposition of grid flexibility strategies and novel storage systems for optimizing energy flows, maximizing self-consumption and reducing grid stress;
  •     TA#4: Linking of the existing CIPs (City Information Platforms) with apps and other digital infrastructure to enable digitalisation of services and connected city ecosystems, integrating also smart e-Mobility to promote the decarbonisation of the mobility sector;
  •     TA#5: Promotion of interdisciplinary citizen engagement and co-creation practices putting citizen at the forefront of shaping the cities they live in and towards the development of each city’s 2050 own bold city-vision.

Overall, RESPONSE will add layers of smartness in key city infrastructures, technologies and services (i.e. buildings, energy grid, e-mobility), will decarbonize the electricity grid and district HVAC systems and increase the grid flexibility by introducing novel storage systems. Additionally, RESPONSE will engage citizenship in their own city development and evolution.

 

ONYX participates in RESPONSE providing its expertise transversally in the project and mainly as member of Dijon's lighthouse ecosystem, where it will further develop and adapt its BIPV solutions on demo sites to achieve the goals of the project.

World´s leading companies and institutions such as Apple Inc, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Samsung, Coca-Cola, Heineken, Pfizer, G.W University to name a few, have led the adoption of photovoltaic glass within their industries.

 

We have provided design assistance to prominent architectural firms such as Foster + Partners, Gensler, Perkins + Will, S.O.M, A.S + G.G among others. Onyx Solar has also participated in joint ventures with general contractors such as Turner, Skanska, Jacobs, KPRS, ACS and Ferrovial.

    Tanjong Pagar

    Located in the middle of Singapore’s financial center, this 64-story tower is the tallest building in the country. Its design, carried out by S.O.M., the New York-based architectural firm, and construction was commissioned by the Korean multinational Samsung. Onyx contributed with the installation of a large photovoltaic canopy of 27,986 sq ft covering the main entrance to the building.

    PFIZER GENYO LABS

    The walls of the building are lined with semi-transparent, amorphous silicon photovoltaic glass panes which are anchored to the existing structure, thus enabling air to flow in the space between the panes and the walls of the building. Thanks to this innovative design, Pfizer offices are enjoying natural light, better thermal insulation and free clean energy with no CO2 emissions.

    Dubai Frame

    The Dubai Frame is an eye-catching impressive rectangular picture frame-shaped building rising 150 meters (492 Ft) from Dubai’s Zabeel Park, spanning 105 meters (344 Ft) horizontally. It attracted a million visitors from around the world during its first year of opening in 2018 and offered them stunning views of the city's past and present. This iconic skyscraper is considered one of the world´s most popular tourist attractions nowadays. Onyx Solar, the world’s leading manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) glass, supplied gold color photovoltaic glass for its rainscreen cladding system.

    Bell Works

    Bell Works is the product of the successful revitalization of the two-million-square-foot Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey. The mixed-use ‘metroburb’ is now a popular destination to work, shop, dine and more. Onyx Solar has supplied Bell Works with amorphous silicon photovoltaic glass panes, to cover a total area of 60,000 sq ft, and create the largest photovoltaic skylight in the USA. Because Bell Works is a landmark protected building, Onyx Solar had to design glass panes similar to the original ones.These glass modules provide this multipurpose building with a lot of natural lighting by capturing daylight and are also able to produce electricity free of CO2 emissions.

  • COCA COLA-FEMSA HQ

    COCA COLA-FEMSA HQ

    Onyx Solar photovoltaic glass panes were installed on the façade of FEMSA´s headquarters, which is the largest Coca-Cola bottling plant company in the world (Monterrey, México). The walls of the building are lined with semi-transparent, amorphous silicon photovoltaic glass panes which are anchored to the existing structure, thus enabling air to flow in the space between the panes and the walls of the building. Thanks to this innovative design, these main offices are enjoying natural light, better thermal insulation and cleaner energy with less CO2 emissions. The energy that the glass panes produce covers up to 15% of the building´s energy requirements.
